Lingerie - Some Terms Explained

The lingerie market has many various products, brands and categories. Picking the right piece of lingerie can be a daunting experience. Here's a few examples of the items you can find on nearly all lingerie websites.

Baby Doll:

The baby doll can be described best as a bodice which has a loose robe on top with a bottom that matches. A loose fitting garment which covers the first half of the body only. Baby dolls can be produced in a variety of colours and materials including silk, satin and lace.

Chemise:

Similar to the baby doll with a similar top but it is much longer on the body. The top has halter or spaghetti straps, A-lined to suit every body structure. Bottoms can be worn but are not usually necessary because of the length. Various colours and fabrics available including silk, satin and lace.

Camisole:

Loose fitting with spaghetti straps. Ideal for wearing under transparent shirts or can be worn as a regular top. Matching skirts and shorts can be used alongside the camisole.

Corset:

Corsets' purpose is to tuck in the stomach and keep the wearer's body in shape. Corsets are now becoming fashionable to be worn os outwear for parties etc. It is important to make sure that if you buy a corset that it is comfortable to wear.

Bridal Set:

Ideal for wedding night and for any other night as well. Usually contains  a camisole top, bra or corset and panties. A garter or pair of stockings may also be included. These sets may cover the body or leave little to the imagination. Various designs, colours and fabrics available.

Boy Shorts:

Boy shorts are becoming more popular than the thong and are perfect for those who do not have the 'perfect' body and need comfort as well as looking sexy. The shorts come in ranges from cotton to lace.

Thongs:

T-shaped underwear bottoms with very narrow side straps. The front can be wide and narrow with the rear virtually invisible. Used as beach-wear, underwear. Thongs are available in lycra, cotton, micro-fibre and are a popular choice.

G-Strings:

Similar to the thong except the rear goes between the buttocks to provide an invisible line.

Garter Belt:

Primarlity used to hold up stockings, each has a set of straps to the front and rear. A corset can be attached to the straps from the edge.
