The Chemise - A Short History

The word 'chemise' comes from the French word for 'shirt'. It's earliest origins date from Roman times when the Roman tunica was worn and it first appeared in Europe around the Middle Ages. Traditionally women wore a chemise under their gowns or robes and this was the only piece of clothing that was washed regularly, as it was closest to the skin.

Women's shirts fell out of fashion in the early 20th century when they were replaced with the brassier, panties, girdles and full-length slips. However the chemise did develop into the smock-frock around the same time and was mainly worn by English laborers. The loose cut and it's wide sleeves made it ideal to use when carrying out heavy labour.

The modern chemise can be used as night-wear, an undergarment or in some cases as outer-wear. Most modern fabrics include silk, satin and lace and the modern chemise comes in various sizes and colours.
